When will Stuff Your Kindle Day happen next?

Another record breaking #StuffYourKindleDay Stuff Your Kindle Day has taken place and we are already being asked THE QUESTION: when is the next Stuff Your Kindle Day?

When will Stuff Your Kindle Day happen next?

That, my friend, is a heavily guarded secret. Only the creator of the stuff your e-reader blasts, romance author Zoe York, knows the dates! For 2024, she promises to share them first to our free reader alert email service. Sign up and get an exclusive notification when 2024 dates DO get announced.

2024 is also the 10th anniversary of #StuffYourKindle.

Zoe York created this indie author event 10 years when she was a relatievely new author. Zoe had been writting full time for 6 months and saying YES to all promo opportunities. When those ran out, she created her own.

It was Boxing Day 2014, the day after Christmas. The pitch was simple: here's a list of ebooks that are FREE right now. Put them all on your Kindle and do nothing but read for a few days. That first promo, there were 35 authors who each put in two books each.

It was about community 10 years ago and it is still.

All books included in OUR lists are submitted by indie authors who contribute to lifting up this community event. This is a labour of love, a celebration of reading, and an amazing opportunity to find a new-to-you author who will keep sharing free reads for years to come. One reason Zoe is holding back the dates for 2024 is to keep this event community focused. The incredible growth over 2023 feels a bit like a runaway train! But readers are always welcome to get on our email alert list, and participating authors all also share the event in their newsletters, too!

Thank you for being part of this community!

Happy Reading!

Santa's Little Helpers: Mastering the Art of Subtle Christmas Hints

Christmas is the season of giving and sharing, and it's also the time when we eagerly anticipate the joy of unwrapping thoughtful presents from our loved ones. But have you ever found yourself secretly yearning for a specific gift, unsure of how to drop a hint without sounding too direct? You're not alone. In this blog post, we'll explore the art of leaving subtle hints for your loved ones about what you want for Christmas, ensuring that the gift you receive is both cherished and meaningful.

Disclosure: Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.

The Power of a Wish List

One of the most direct yet subtle ways to let your loved ones know what you want for Christmas is by creating a wish list. Websites like Amazon, Etsy, and various gift registry platforms make it easy to compile a list of desired items. Share the link with your family and friends, and they'll appreciate having a selection to choose from, making their gift-giving experience stress-free.

Dropping Casual Comments

Casual comments can be a great way to drop hints without explicitly saying, "I want THIS for Christmas." You can talk about the latest Kindle you've been hoping to upgrade to, the movie you can't wait to see, or the hobby you've been wanting to try. Conversations like these often lead your loved ones to pick up on your interests.

Window Shopping Together

Take advantage of opportunities to go window shopping with your loved ones, either in person or online. While exploring stores or websites, express your admiration for certain items. Comments like "This dress is so beautiful," or "I've always wanted a coffee maker like this" can help steer them in the right gift-giving direction.

Subtle Social Media Shares

Social media can be a great platform for dropping hints. Share articles, photos or posts related to your interests or desired gifts. For example, if you love reading e-books (just a guess) share a blog post about Kindle Unlimited dos and don’ts and your loved ones might take the hint and surprise you with a subscription for Kindle Unlimited or Audible.

Or just share TikToks of the viral Kindle Remote Control Page Turner. Who doesn’t want that this year???

Gift Ideas from Friends

Enlist the help of your friends. Sometimes, friends can act as intermediaries and subtly convey your wishes to your family. They can mention your interests and the types of gifts you'd appreciate in casual conversations with your loved ones.

Nostalgic Conversations

Reminiscing about cherished childhood gifts or the best presents you've ever received can be a gentle way to drop hints. Mentioning a past gift that brought you immense joy can make your loved ones consider similar items for this Christmas.

Remember that the joy of the season lies in the thought and effort put into each gift, and your hints will help your loved ones choose something that truly warms your heart.

We would LOVE to know what’s on your Christmas wish list. Drop a comment below with what you are hoping to get.

Happy hinting and happy holidays!

When does Stuff Your Kindle Day take place?

The dates for 2024 HAVE NOT been announced. When Stuff Your Kindle Day will take place in 2024 is a heavily guarded secret. Join our free reader alert email service to be the first to know what we are planning for 2024.

In 2023, Stuff Your Kindle took place 4 times (March 31, June 30, September 20, and December 27.)

Is this only for Kindle users?

Not at all. If you prefer to read ebooks on a Nook or Kobo e-reader, or if you use the Kobo, Apple Books, or Google Play apps to read ebooks, we have “Stuff Your E-Reader” pages for those stores, too! You can browse the thousands of FREE BOOKS being offered for any major e-reader platform.

If you are new to reading ebooks, you will need an Amazon account. You can download the Kindle App on any device to access the free books. (And same for Kobo! Shout out to our Canadian readers!) If you prefer Apple or Google Play, you probably already have an ebook app on your phone or tablet and you might not even know it!

How long do I have to read the books once I download them?

That’s the best part. Once the books are on your Kindle or the Kindle App they are yours forever.

I have Kindle Unlimited.. can I still participate and “Stuff My Kindle” with more than 20 books?

Absolutely and this is such a great question so we explain it better in this blog post. Check it out for the differences between the Kindle store, the Kindle app, and Kindle Unlimited. The good news is, they all work together, and the short answer is, yes you can stuff your Kindle—and keep those books forever!—without using any of your twenty “Kindle Unlimited” borrow slots.

Can I just go to Amazon and search for free books? Why do I start with the links at romancebookworms.com on #StuffYourKindleDay

This indie romance author event is something we have been doing for almost 10 years. We are authors AND readers. This is a labor of love and we want you to have the best experience possible. Here’s a few amazing reasons to browse our lists instead of just zooming straight to a retailer:

1. We include categories the retailers don't! If you just want erotic romance, we have section for that. Young adult that is actually young adult, and not jammed with other books that don't apply? We've got that, too. And books by authors of colour, with protagonists of colour? We asked all those authors to tag themselves, and in addition to their books being listed in the relevant genre list, we've also popped those books onto their own list. (Is that three reasons in one? YOU BET!)

2. There are DIFFERENT BOOKS free on different retailers! If you start with our website, you can check out more than one retailer. Personally, I use them all. 👀 #bookhoarder #sorrynotsorry

3. All books included in OUR lists are submitted by indie authors who contribute to lifting up this community event. This is a labour of love, a celebration of reading, and an amazing opportunity to find a new-to-you author who will keep sharing free reads for years to come.

Wait this has been going on for 10 years? How did it start?

Yup! Time flies when you are reading free e-books. Stuff Your Kindle Day was created 10 years ago when Zoe York was a relatively new author. She had been writing full-time for 6 months and saying YES to all promo opportunities. When those ran out, she created her own.

It was Boxing Day 2014, the day after Christmas. The pitch was simple: here's a list of ebooks that are FREE right now. Put them all on your Kindle and do nothing but read for a few days.

In that first promo, there were 35 authors, two books each. It grew and grew. An overnight success that took 9 years :)

As you wait for the 2024 Stuff Your Kindle Days to be announced, subscription services provide a budget-friendly way to satisfy your literary cravings. I have Kindle Unlimited! Can I also "stuff my kindle" with more than 20 books?

This is a great question! And it can be kind of confusing, so in this blog post, I’ll break down the differences between the Kindle store, the Kindle app, and Kindle Unlimited. The good news is, they all work together, and the short answer is, yes you can stuff your Kindle—and keep those books forever!—without using any of your twenty “Kindle Unlimited” borrow slots.

What is the Kindle store?

The Kindle store is the overall term for the online ebook store on Amazon. Here you can either buy books (and keep them forever), or borrow books inside a subscription program called Kindle Unlimited. These Kindle ebooks can be reader either on a dedicated Kindle device, or in an app loaded to a smartphone or tablet.

I have that! The Kindle app! But I can’t buy books in it? I can only borrow inside Kindle Unlimited?

This is a common question. Why can I only borrow Kindle Unlimited books inside the Kindle app? The short answer is, because the Apple app store and the Google Play app store would want to take a cut of the ebook sale as an “in-app purchase”, and because of the royalty structure, that would actually end up costing Amazon all of its profits on some of those books.

So how do I buy books to read in the Kindle app?

You can buy a book, to keep forever, either in your phone’s web browser (Safari on iPhone, or Chrome on your Android). I stay logged in to Amazon both in the browser and in the app, and purchases made on the website (inside the Kindle store) then automatically synch to my app after I one-click on them.

Some people prefer to do this on a computer, especially on a day like Stuff Your Kindle day, when they want to click click click on a bunch of amazing free romance novels.

So I can “buy” romance novels for free?

Yes! So this is the best part about the Kindle store: it’s not just paid books! They also have a lot of free books, and when you click BUY on that free book, instead of BORROW inside Kindle Unlimited, you get to keep that book forever. For free.

But I can only have 20 books in my Kindle Unlimited library, right?

Yes, that’s right…but that’s not your Kindle library. That’s just the Kindle Unlimited portion of it! In addition to the 20 borrow slots, you can also buy (and buy for free!) as many Kindle books as you want, and Amazon will keep them forever in your digital library. You can then synch them to any device your account is registered on, including the Kindle app on your phone.

Why can't I buy books in the Kindle app?

Hey fellow bookworms and e-book enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into a predicament that has left many of us scratching our heads: Why on earth can't we buy books directly in the Kindle app?

As much as we adore our Kindle devices and the convenience they offer, this little conundrum has sparked some curiosity. Let's embark on a lighthearted quest to uncover the mystery behind this apparent book-buying blockade!

Disclosure: Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.

To get our answer we first have to take a trip back in time

When the Kindle app was first introduced, users could make direct purchases within the app. Life was simple, straightforward, and oh-so-convenient. iPhone users were first to notice this change back in 2011 when this blissful era came to an abrupt end due to an unfortunate clash between Apple and Amazon. (Android users had a longer honeymoon period with using the Kindle app to purchase books, but that came to an end in 2022 as well!)

Basically, Apple and Google both insist on taking a nice cut from every in-app purchase made within third-party apps. Amazon, being the e-commerce giant that it is, isn't too keen on sharing its profits. As a result, they made the strategic decision to remove the in-app purchasing feature from the Kindle app. Sneaky, but can we really blame them?

What does this mean for you?

If you want to buy books for your Kindle app or even sign up for Kindle Unlimited, you'll have to first venture outside the app itself. Our friends at Amazon have made sure to make this really easy. All you need to do is hop onto your favorite web browser, head to the Amazon website, and make your purchase there. Once you've made your purchase, the book will magically appear on your Kindle app. So, while you can't buy books directly within the app itself, the synchronization between your Amazon account and the app ensures that your new acquisitions will be ready and waiting for you in your virtual library.

Wait.. are you serious?

Sure, it might require an extra step or two, but hey, we book lovers are no strangers to going the extra mile for our literary treasures, right? Think of it as a mini-adventure before embarking on the grand adventure within the pages of your new book.

While the inability to buy books directly in the Kindle app might seem like an inconvenience there is definitely a work around and now you know the reason why!

If you decide to go the Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading route will not have this issue in the Kindle App once you first have signed up outside the app. You will have access to thousands of books right within the app. For the summer you might also consider trying Audible and enjoying audio books on your Hot Girl Summer walks.

Happy reading!

And remember, the best part of e-readers.. no one knows WHAT you are reading :)

How to Change Amazon ebook Stores

by Zoe York, Canadian author and ebook reader

You’re a voracious ebook reader in Canada, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, or somewhere else in the world where Amazon sells ebooks on a dedicated storefront that is not Amazon.com … and when you click on book recommendations, the link takes you to an Amazon storefront where you see a rude message that the book is not available to buy. “Why don’t they automatically re-direct to my geographical region?” you grumble to yourself (and dear reader, this is ME, because I live in Canada, and keep my ebook library on Amazon.ca).

But little do you know that your neighbour, also a voracious ebook reader, keeps her ebook library on Amazon.com, even though she’s not in the United States, because she has been buying ebooks on .com since before they were sold on her local Amazon storefront. Even though Amazon offers the option to move libraries, she resists, because she likes those US links! But…some authors use geo-redirect links, which send her to Amazon.ca (or .de, .co.uk, .com.au, etc.) when she doesn’t want to be there!

Both of you experience the Amazon Frustration, as I have come to call it: for their own reasons, Amazon does not remember which storefront we read ebooks on, and does not redirect us magically to the right place.

So, readers, we must take matters into our own hands. The good news is, this is somewhat easily done if you know a few tricks! These tricks work on both mobile view and in a computer browser.

Trick #1: Change the URL

This is the fastest way to do it, especially if you are on a computer. All Amazon links use universal ASIN numbers, so if you are in a browser window where you can see the link in the URL bar, you can swap out the country code from .com to .ca, etc.

Trick #2: Send a link to your mobile device’s browser

If you are browsing on a mobile device, in an app like Facebook or Instagram that opens websites inside the app, there will be an option to send that page to your browser instead (on Apple devices, this is send to Safari, for example).

Trick #3: Request a desktop version

Once you have the link in your browser, you can either change the URL address manually as above, or you can request a desktop version: this will show you the page as if you were on a computer, and then Amazon will show you an option to redirect to your home country. Now, worth noting: Amazon does not send you to the same ASIN product page, but rather a search result for the metadata (I KNOW, THIS MAKES NO SENSE, as we can figure out how to manually redirect to the exact same product page by just changing the country code? But the thing is, in traditional publishing, not all books are published with world rights. So…there are some times when then manual ASIN URL redirect will not work, and the Amazon metadata search is the better option).

Trick #4: Ask your favourite authors to use Books2Read links

To be honest, at the time of writing this, I don’t use Books2Read links that often myself, because it’s a new habit I need to train myself into. But Books2Read links seem to remember storefront preferences better than anything else, and they satisfy both the reader in Germany who wants to buy her books on Amazon.de and her neighbour who still keeps her library on Amazon.com.

This is not a sponsored post! I just think Books2Read is a nifty service.
